Making Space for Learning: Trauma Informed Practice in Schools, developed by the Australian Childhood Foundation, is a research-informed educational resource for teachers and school counsellors to understand the effects of trauma on children. The Making Space for Learning resource provides information about the short- and long-term effects of trauma and how various traumas can affect a child’s biological and social development. Providing information about the neurobiological, emotional, and physiological responses to stress and long-term effects on development in an accessible way, the Making Space for Learning resource helps educators and counselors facilitate safe and supportive environments for young students that have experienced trauma. In addition, this resource also provides lesson plans and strategies for supporting students through trauma. Although used as a general guide on trauma, this resource would be beneficial for educators who work with refugee students that have experienced trauma.
